The Federal .Trade Commission just launched a national “Do Not Call” list. Those registering by Aug. 31 should be free of most such calls beginning Oct. 1. Those registering later can expect calls to cease within three months. It costs nothing to get on the list. Register your phone number(s) online at www.donotcall.gov . (Note that it’s “.gov,” not “.com.”) Or call 888-382-1222 toll- free from the phone number you want to register. Some telemarketers may still call, but they face fines of up to $11,000 per call. Political organizations will remain free to contact you, and you may still receive solicitation calls on behalf of charities or calls to conduct surveys. Also, companies with an “established business relationship” may call for up to 18 months after your last purchase, though you can always ask them to stop. Once you have registered, your phone number registration will be effective for 5 years. It will be illegal for most telemarketers to call you, and you will be able to file a complaint if a telemarketer does call you. The website www.donotcall.gov provides information about filing a complaint.
